For 150 years, the Danish Club has been a focal point for Danes          in the UK

On 12 December 1863, a group of Danes met at the Morland Hotel in London’s Soho to found Foreningen Danmark, with the aim of providing a framework for cultural and social activities for Danes in United Kingdom.  For the first 60 years, the Club moved from place to place (mostly finding refuge in hotels), before taking up residence at 62 Knightsbridge in 1922.

In 1998 the Club was once again on the move and has now found its home at the Naval Club in Mayfair.

Over this long history, the Club has welcomed many visitors from stalwart members, to glamorous guests, including writers, musicians, politicians and royalty.  Social gatherings have been at the core of the Club, even during the Second World War, when it became a meeting point for free Danes, members found an opportunity to celebrate the King’s birthday!

The Danish royal family have for many years had strong links with the Club, with the Prince Christian (later Christian X) becoming the Club’s first patron in 1911, a position he held until his death.  The Club has since been privileged to have Frederik IX as patron from 1947 to 1972, and from 1972 to the present, Queen Magrethe II has taken the role.

On the 30th of November 2013 we have marked the Club’s 150 anniversary with a ball at the Intercontinental Hotel.
